Author : Gargi Shanbag

India has many talented & celebrated directors. One of them is Ashutosh Gowariker. He has directed movies which have moved the audience & gotten critically acclaimed as well. He has a larger-than-life aspect when it comes to filmmaking. He is known for directing films “set on a huge canvas while boasting of an opulent treatment”. He is awarded with Filmfare, Zee Cine, Screen Awards, as well as many International Awards for his outstanding sense of direction.

We suggest our readers to watch these noted movies if haven’t cause you’ll fall in love with his movies thereafter.

1. Lagaan (2001)
This movie is a historical epic sports drama film, which was produced by Aamir Khan & directed by Gowariker. It revolves around the time when British ruled India, & an arrogant British officer challenges a village inhabitants to play a match of cricket in order to waive off their taxes. Lagaan received critical acclaim and awards at International Film festivals, as well as many Indian film awards. It became the third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

2. Swades (2004)
A Shahrukh Khan starrer, this movie revolves around the life of an NRI, who at first worked closely with NASA. Later he returns to India to meet & take his nanny, back to The States. This entire journey turns out to be an eye-opener for him, as he realizes the love for his motherland, & leaves NASA to work with an Indian organization & also work for the betterment of his nation. This movie, an overnight success, later got bestowed with ‘cult’ status.

3. Jodhaa Akbar
Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles, this movie is a historical romance drama, produced by Ronnie Screwvala & directed by Ashutosh. It showed romance between King Akbar & Rajput princess Jodha Bai. It was a critical and commercial success. The film won the Audience Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the São Paulo International Film Festival, two awards at the Golden Minbar International Film Festival, seven Star Screen Awards and five Filmfare Awards, in addition to two nominations at the 3rd Asian Film Awards.

4. Mohen-Jo-Daro (2016)
It is an action adventure film, which tries to throw light on Mohen-Jo-Daro, a part of Indus valley civilization. The story follows a farmer Sarman (Hrithik Roshan) who travels to the city of Mohenjo Daro and falls in love with a high-status woman (Pooja Hegde), and who must then challenge the city’s elite, and fight against overwhelming odds to save their civilization.

5. Ventilator (2016)
This movie is my favourite because it has Ashutosh Gowariker & Priyanka Chopra together, so it’s a visual treat for audience. Ventilator is a Marathi, comedy-drama which shows a family which plans to rush to Mumbai because an elderly member is severely ill & if he passes, there will be many issues coming in thereafter. Though it wasn’t directed or produced by Gowariker, his & 100 other Marathi ensemble cast’s presence itself made the movie worth watching.

Well, here’s a fun fact: The music score for the first three movies was given by none other than A.R Rahman. So, here are the movies which I personally loved & would recommend my readers to watch ASAP!
