Many people outside of Punjab may not know the story of Mirza-Sahiba but it’s one beautiful folktale about star crossed lovers.

The movie stars on a sweet note and keeps you engaged with Suchi (Saiyami Kher) and Mohnish’s (Harshvardhan Kapoor) innocent love – childhood sweethearts and all. They part and meet again in different circumstances. Cut to them as young adults, the gorgeous princess and the horse trainer. Suchitra is engaged to Prince Karan (Anuj Chowdhury). The movie then goes on narrate a saga of rage, grief and romance!

While the story sounds interesting, the movie fails to do it justice. You see a clear lack of chemistry between the leads and it almost feels like you are waiting for the passion to explode – but it doesn’t.

There’ no one better than Gulzar to be able to translate the story into a film. You don’t mind if Gulzar’s verses dominate because they are amazingly written and fantastically captured. This with Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s music is one part that stays with you.
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra creates a breathtaking world. He tries time warp and is confident with the technique.

Harshwardhan Kapoor is a superstar in the making. He portrays his character with brilliant ease. Saiyami Kher is here to stay and she knows it! The debutants are the savior of a rather struggling story.

Everything said and done, Mirzya is still fails to create an impact…and it only looks beautiful.

Final verdict – 2.5 Buzzing Bees
