  • The Square features the third observation on the series of studying human behaviour after his past movies, Involuntary and Play. It talks about the human probability to help others in public, is inversely proportional to the number of bystanders in that area. This diffusion of responsibility is known as ‘bystander apathy’.

 

 

  • The movie is inspired by the political unrest that once prevailed in Sweden. Because of the rising unemployment and the fear of a decline in status have led individuals to mistrust one another and to mistrust society.

 

 

  • The movie is the narration of the Good Samaritan experiment which means to help others in need, conducted in 1973 at Princeton. The experiment had a few students to participate in a drill wherein they were instructed to fill a form and switch building in a hurry. A fellow member acted-out as if he was in need of help but to his surprise, most of the students were busy rushing out of the building displaying their less helpful behaviour.

 

 

The Square, directed by Ruben Ostlund, starring actors Claes Bang, Dominic West, Elizabeth Moss and Terry Notary,  is a funny satire featuring different aspects of an urban lifestyle and a hilarious take-down of arrogance and elitism found in upper-middle-class art circles. The director of the film has done an extensive research on human behaviour and psychological inhibitions coming across a lot of undiscovered facts.
