Buzzing Bees – 2.5
From laundry bills to aadhi padhi novel, Rock On!! went on to become a cult classic. The movie brought together characters that you fell in love with and music that you play in your car even today. So, it’s suffice to say that our expectations going into see Rock On 2!! were really high and we left the theatre feeling more than a little disappointed.
Shujaat Saudagar starts off a new chapter in Magik’s life on a wonderful note. Sure the thought is really nice, we’ll give him that but the story-line is so weak, it will shock!
The movie has some good performances. Farhan Akhtar displays his pain well but somehow you don’t believe that he is a rockstar. Not even one bit! Arjun Rampal and Purab Kohli find their own character spaces but it restricts them. Sure there are some nice moments between the three of them, but a lot of it feels forced. The movie fails to utilize the talent power that Shashank Arora is but he makes his presence felt. There’s also Prachi Desai who is in the same role as the first movie but with shorter hair.
And Shraddha Kapoor – She is the saving grace of the movie. She is comfortable in the shoes of a talented girl struggling with confidence and adds a life to the music (that has not picked up as well as Rock On’s music did). Hers might be the only performance watching out for.
Overall, the script is a major downer. It fails to hold your interest and the narration tries a little too hard. You see a lot of it explaining the feeling and thoughts of characters which ideally you would want to discover yourself.
Go for it but don’t go thinking you’re going to watch Magik come to life.
